Wiki Loves Punjab 2026 is a Punjabi Wikimedian’s community-led campaign to document the villages of Punjab on Wikimedia Commons through freely licensed photographs and media. Launched on 1 February, the initiative focuses on systematically covering village’s key landmarks, public institutions, landscapes, and everyday life so that readers across Wikimedia projects have verifiable, reusable visuals.

Goals

• Increase visibility of villages on Wikimedia Commons by creating and organizing high-quality, freely licensed media that accurately represents village landscapes, landmarks, institutions, and everyday life.
• Enhance coverage across Wikimedia sister projects such as Wikipedia and Wikidata, by enabling the reuse of Commons media and structured data to improve articles, village items, and related knowledge.
• Build local participation and ownership, encouraging community members, students, and volunteers to contribute to documenting their own villages and local heritage.

Prizes

To motivate contributors and recognize their efforts, prizes will be awarded at the end of the campaign. Photographs will be judged on originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact and artistic merit. Currently we can only Give prizes to Participants from India. Total 5 prizes will be given.

• 1st Prize: INR 10,000 worth gift voucher.
• 2nd Prize: INR 8,000 worth gift voucher.
• 3rd Prize: INR 7,000 worth gift voucher.
• 4th Prize: INR 5,000 worth gift voucher.
• 5th Prize: INR 5,000 worth gift voucher.

(Disclaimer: Prizes will be distributed in the form of major brand gift cards/vouchers, equivalent to the INR amount.)

Rules & Uploading Guidelines

To ensure consistency and usefulness of the uploaded media, all participants must follow these rules:

Basic Rules

• All uploads must be original work created by the participant.
• Must be uploaded under free license (e.g. CC BY SA 4.0, CC BY 4.0 or CC0)
• Only photos related to villages in Punjab region are eligible. (Punjab region = West Punjab + East Punjab)
• Images should not contain any signature or watermarks.
• Image size should be more than 2MP
• Each file must be properly categorized under the correct village or district category.
• Uploads should be made within the campaign period (1 February to 15 March) to qualify for prizes. You are welcome to upload existing photos from your gallery; however, please verify that they haven't been previously posted to Wikimedia Commons..
• Images created with AI will not be accepted

Uploading Guidelines

Use the Commons Upload Wizard. Please add following to your uploaded files:

• Add clear file descriptions including:
  • Village name
  • Tehsil and District
• Location / coordinates
• Relevant categories
• Avoid blurry, duplicate, or low-quality images.
• Try to capture a variety of subjects, such as:
  • Panchayat buildings
  • Schools, hospitals, community centers
  • Religious sites
  • Roads, bus stops, markets
  • Natural landscapes (fields, rivers, ponds)
  • Signboards and maps
